OK, so the weather on Tuesday night in Wellington didn't exactly lend itself well to thoughts of either the apparently fast approaching 'long hot Summer' or distant African plains, but if you were at SFBH watching Yeasayer, there was potentially little else on your mind.
The Brooklyn, New York based quartet released All Hour Cymbals earlier in the year, and on the back of an American-wide tour with major players Beck and MGMT have been hitting Australia and New Zealand hard over the last couple of weeks.
The band opened with 'No Need To Worry' with the choiral lyrics 'Sister won't you rise with me/' - an appropriate statement in both its sentiment and musical tone for the show that was to come. Singles '2080' and 'Wait for the Summer' were obvious crowd favourites but for the entirety the eclecticly dressed and maned (the guitarist has the long, luscious hair most girls would die for) Yeasayer were on the stage the band were transported to an apocalyptic, political, intelligent, and ultimately uplifting location, that acknowledges its Western footing and influences but thinks, lives, breathes and performs in a space beyond that.
Having MADE people come to this show with my 5.30pm post-work enthusiasm and youtube videoclip playing and pay the fair but, for a band they didn't know relatively expensive cover charge, I was super pleased to hear Ashlee a co-worker conclude to another co-worker the next day "Sorry Andy, but last nights show (Yeasayer) is going to kick Friday night's (Blackalicious's) ass" proceeding to sell their Blackalicious tickets to buy Yeasayer albums - YEYAH!
