Flashy Tasty : Win a POPPET!

Rona Green is an artist from Melbourne known for her peculiar images of creatures bearing marks and scars that tell of past experience. Her first New Zealand Show entitled 'Flashy Tasty' runs from 20 May until the 13 of June and is being exhibited at Solander Gallery in Wellington.

Flashy Tasty explores ideas about identity and the darker side of the psyche and features 'various breeds from all walks of life...where chalk and cheese co-exist to battle the sodden elemental.' Her work is represented in over 40 public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank and Chiang Mai Contemporary Art Museum, Thailand...And she's generously giving FLURO one mini work to give away on our blog!

This soft sculpture doll, which she refers to as a 'poppet', is 10cm high and made with her very own blood, sweat and tears. Figuratively of course! To win this original art work simply tell us why you'd like a Rona Poppet to call your own!

Because I enjoy the polarity of dark and light that can be seen within this work - in the most basic of terms this is represented in black and white. However I see a contradictory subtext here as well; this piece seems to hold a mix of both fanciful childhood experience (puppets, "cute" representation of animal) and also darker adult themes (tattooing, the body looks pill-like etc). It is as though Green tugs the viewer in two directions, allowing them to feel comforted by the soft toy image on first glance, yet ultimately subverting this initial impression with lingering hints of the macabre.

Oh, I also really like cats.

Thoughts on life with Poppet:

I don't have a pet, my goldfish died in the drought last summer and I couldn't take them into National Parks. I think Poppet would survive a drought and enjoy a quiet stroke. It would be fun to adventure with Poppet, he (?) could fit in my pocket whilst we'd go rock climbing and scare ourselves silly riding from Mildura to Lake Eyre all on desert dirt tracks. We could take self portraits along the way.

Go hard!

I am in love with this animal poppet by Rona Green because it represents an animal spirit that I so much love. I know it is a cat - or I believe it is but I see it as a rat. I grew up with a pet rat named Coconut and I feel that Rona has captured it's spirit and this makes be very happy. I have known of this awesome artist but I have not seen one of these 3 d doll pieces as of today. I feel that for these reasons - I would love own the beautiful Poppet!

This gritty little poppet needs to become part of our family. The rest of our soft toys have become way too contented up here in the hills we call home, too comfortable, taking advantage of our hospitality and expecting everything to be done for THEM! We need some corruptive character to move on in and shake things up abit, let them know it's not good enough to just sit there and be cute. This poppet is the one to do it. I just know.

that must be why I never had one, I can't eat pizza and besides that my town didn't have McDonald's or Pizza Hut just Fish&Chip's. The only toy you get with Fish&Chips is newspaper.
